Paranapanema Groundwater: natural resilience and the role of technology in water treatment

Water security is one of the greatest challenges in Brazil today. Between periods of drought, increased demand, and the impacts of climate change, the availability of quality water requires increasingly intelligent strategies for monitoring, management, and treatment.

A study conducted by São Paulo State University (Unesp) brought encouraging results when analyzing the behavior of groundwater in the Paranapanema River Basin. The survey showed that, even in the face of intensified well use and reduced rainfall, aquifer levels in the region demonstrated high resilience.

But what does this mean for the future of water management in Brazil? And how does cutting-edge water treatment technology fit into this reality?

What did the research reveal about the resilience of groundwater?

  • The study evaluated data from three major aquifers: Bauru, Serra Geral, and Guarani, between 2003 and 2020.
  • The methodology combined field measurements with satellite data from NASA’s GRACE project in partnership with the German Aerospace Center, capable of identifying variations in groundwater storage.
  • The results indicated that, even under water stress scenarios, aquifers maintained stable water levels.

This behavior reinforces the importance of groundwater as a strategic reserve to complement supply, especially during droughts and in the face of growing urbanization.

The challenge of management and associated risks

Despite the positive outlook, experts warn of some risks:

  • Irregular well drilling can compromise water quality and aquifer balance.
  • Indiscriminate use, without technical monitoring, increases the risk of land subsidence.
  • Even resilient, aquifers show signs of gradual decline, which requires public policies and sustainable management.

These points highlight that relying solely on the natural resilience of aquifers is not enough. It is necessary to invest in monitoring, regulation, and water treatment technologies that ensure efficiency in distribution.

Hidro Solo’s contribution to water security

At Hidro Solo, we understand that effective and sustainable water treatment is an essential link in the preservation and distribution of water resources. That is why we develop highly technological treatment solutions, such as Pluvitec Blocks and Crepines, which are part of the Confined Flow Bottom system used in sand filters at water treatment plants, as well as Disc Filtration Systems, which offer:

  • Low head loss, optimizing energy and reducing operating costs.
  • High performance in removing solids and impurities, ensuring consistent water quality.
  • Durability and reliability, key factors in maintaining supply security, including in areas dependent on aquifers.

By combining the natural resilience of aquifers with efficiency in water treatment, it is possible to ensure a more balanced and reliable water distribution, even in scarcity scenarios.

Paths for the future

The Unesp study on the Paranapanema Basin carries an important message: we have valuable and relatively stable underground resources. However, their availability can only be guaranteed if responsible use is combined with technological innovation.

Hidro Solo reinforces its commitment to water sustainability, offering solutions that not only treat water efficiently but also contribute to the longevity of aquifers and the security of supply.
