Ion exchange resins are synthetic adsorbents media, enriched with specific ions that, when in contact with water, have the property to perform ion exchange of this chemical element with another that one desires to remove from the water. Since they are able to remove both positive (cations) and negative ions (anions) they are divided into anionic and cationic resins.
Softener: Strongly acid cation resin. Regenerated with brine.
Demineralization: Strongly acid cation resin and strongly basic anion resin. They are regenerated respectively with hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH).
